about

Triple album of improvisations by Vancouver composer Carl Winter in an interactive setting. Inspired by the generalist multi-instrumentalist skills of the 17th Century Hauboists, the breadth and range of
Berio's Sequenzas, the interactive complexity of George Lewis' Voyager system, Lee Scratch Perry's echo effects and the mad, whimsical ravings of P.D.Q. Bach, "Coucou Bird Cadenzas" blurs the lines between melody, noise and harmony, between the traditional and the avant-garde and draws from a patchwork of influences: from Classical, free Jazz improv,, "no-wave" rock and blues/folk idioms and shamelessly veers from foreboding gravitas to endearingly crass humour. All programming (using InverSamp (carlwinterartist.ca/inversamp7), built in Max 8 (Cycling74.com)). and solo instruments performed by Carl Winter. This project was made possible through funding from the Canada Council for the Arts/Conseil des Arts du Canada. These recordings use samples of the Vienna Symphonic Library.
